I think there's a lot of beauty missing from our world, and modern art in
general-- something you find in the old styles of art nouveau, the
Pre-Raphaelites and the decorative aspects of ancient art. I try to bring
it back in my paintings in my own style and way. The great illustrators
know this, and do it too-- Yoshitaka Amano, Mokona Apapa, Edmund DuLac,
Michael Whelan. Their work is either very beautiful or very fascinating,
which is what I try to be.
The Ring Gallery of Shirl Sazynski
- Uses a variety of mediums to create magical visions.
My inspiration comes from literary sources and cinema-- from fabulous
costume designs and lavish sets-- from fashion ads, techno music and a
very narrow spectrum of Gothic. The decadently beautiful side. I don't
want to reflect reality, I want to change it into something better. And I
love graphic novels. Well done, they go so much beyond individual
paintings to tell a story.
The artist says:
"I'm fairly young. I studied art at Radford University, and was a very
ambitious teenager, submitting my work all over the place. I did a
journalism stint, do graphic design, and am in the process of
illustrating a children's book that works on several different levels.
I'm usually mistaken for older, which isn't a bad thing at 21.:^)"
